As the body responsible for implementing activities to safeguard Venice and the lagoon delegated to the State, the Consorzio Venezia Nuova works through Conventions (contracts signed with the granting administration) on the basis of a General Plan of Interventions divided into separate but interconnected lines of action:

  • defence from high waters
  • defence from sea storms
  • environmental defence.

The Consorzio Venezia Nuova began work in 1987 when the first work sites were opened.
Since then, a vast number of safeguarding measures have been implemented to restore and protect the lagoon habitat, secure polluted sites, defend and reinforce the entire Venice coastline and jetties at the lagoon inlets and locally defend built up areas in the lagoon from the most frequent floods.

At the heart of this important environmental programme taken on by the State is the Mose System mobile barriers, commenced in 2003, which

will definitively secure Venice and the entire lagoon area from all high waters and the ever present risk of a catastrophic event such as that of 1966.

All interventions are at an advanced state of completion and represent a major environmental defence, restoration and management programme, not just in terms of the overall quantities, but also of the know-how acquired in the safeguarding field and in the management of complex ecosystems.
This type of project involves a high percentage of unusual work and advanced technology and although projects with similar objectives have also been implemented in other countries, the conditions of the "Venice case" are completely different, as are the constraints to be respected, associated with the specific character of the lagoon environment and the conditions of the historic city and its needs for conservation through innovation.
The knowledge, experience and resources (human, technical and scientific) accumulated over the years represent an important asset in a world with ever more need of solutions to protect the land and environment in general and of defence from the sea and coastal defence in particular.
